I will discuss library news, literary news, trends, and technology. Please see my review of the biography Stieg Larsson, my friend by Kurdo Baksi. This is a new book in our library so you should place a request to see it.
It's finally Spring, and there's lots of new things at your library. I have purchased many new adult mysteries, adult fiction, and adult non-fiction titles. Please look at the New Materials section on our main menu bar for details.I have also added some donations (hardcover & paperback books, DVDs, etc.) to our collection. Thanks kindly to anyone who has been donating to our library. Anything that I don't select for our collection will be sold at the Used Materials/Books Sale on the Regatta Weekend.
For the first time our Board donated money towards buying access to
E-books. I will be selecting many new fiction and non-fiction titles for adults and children. You will be able to use them on your home computers or view them on our Supernet computers. You should check out our existing titles by going to www.trac.lib.overdrive.com. If you have suggestions for E-books that you would like to access please let me know.
We have also purchased 2 new laptops that will soon be available for use in the library.
We will be hiring a summer student to assist with the TD Summer Reading Club (SRC) so please see the posting in the middle of our homepage. This year's theme is "Splash!Celebrate Summer" which is a perfect theme for our summer village by Lake Wabamun. I will be adding a section under "Programs" on our main menu bar with more information about the SRC towards the end of May.
The library's hours will be changed for only the week of April 25th-30th. On Thurs. April 28th the library will have shorter hours from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00, and it will be closed on Sat. April 30th. Regular hours will return the following week.
CBC provides excellent information about books and authors. It runs a competition every year for the best Canadian book called "Canada Reads". This was the 10th anniversary of the contest so this year they chose the best Canadian book for the decade/10 years. They asked Canadians to send in nominations in fall 2010 to their website, and whittled this list down to the top ten books as voted by Canadians. Then 5 celebrity judges picked a book from this list to promote. They held a debate and "vote off" on Feb. 11, 12 & 13th.You can go to their website at www.cbc.ca/books/canadareads/ to watch videos of the event and read about the contest. They have a list of all the books that have been nominated or won the contest for the last 10 years.
The winning book is Best laid plans by Terry Fallis. It's a satirical look at Canadian politics. It has also won the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour so it's funny as well as skillfully written.
I bought the Best laid plans and the sequel novel The High Road as new books for our collection. You should place a request in Tracpac because these books are very popular. I am reading the Best laid plans, and I'm enjoying it!
CBC Radio 1 has great programs about books. "The Next Chapter" is about Canadian authors and books hosted by Shelagh Rogers. It's on Mondays from 1-2 p.m. on 740 a.m. or on Saturdays from 4-5 p.m.. Eleanor Wachtel hosts a program called "Writers and Company" on Sundays from 5-6 p.m. She interviews foreign or Canadian authors, and she usually does one in-depth interview of an author on each show.
The CBC Canada Reads website has cool features such as: book clubs, twitter comments, voting, bookie awards, prize contests, etc.
We have the People's Choice Winner of Canada Reads 2011 in our collection... the graphic novel trilogy Essex County. See which book you prefer, and post your comment to the blog to share!
Stay tuned for a Seba Beach Readers' Choice page where you can see which books our patrons recommend., and a new Writers' Club for kids and teens.
Hi! You will need to come into the library so that I can enter your data into our computer system and so that I can give you a library card with your bar code on it. The library is open on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Thursdays from 12:00 - 5 P.m., and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Have you had a public library membership before with one of the regional systems, e.g. Yellowhead, Marigold, Peace Library System or Northern Lights System? If so I could update that membership if it was with our Library or else I would create a new one if your membership was at another library.
The information required to set up your membership is:
first name, middle name and last/family name
your current address
your mailing address if different from above
your current phone number
Other optional info:
your e-mail address so that we can send you automatic notices about your account, e.g. almost overdue notices, requests are in, etc.
whether you would like a reading history maintained, e.g. what books, movies, recordings, etc. that you have previously borrowed
Thanks for your interest, and hope you'll come in the library soon!
Welcome to the renovated website! There are 2 new topics on the main menu, New Materials and this blog. People often come in asking for "What's new?" so I have made a list of new books, graphic novels, movies, and TV series. The Program menu has also been edited to give us Program News and Upcoming Programs. The Program News highlights our Halloween Party and contests. You can read about who won costume and Top 10 prizes as well as look at photos of the party. On our scrolling banner there is Novelist. This is an online service that helps you select books to read by genre, related authors, style, etc. You can also see ratings for the popularity of books, which books have won awards, and read teasers for the books.
Anyway, our website is still under construction so some of the links might not work yet but we will fix them soon. Staff at the Yellowhead Library have been very helpful in doing the job.
Please let me know what you think of the changes and if you have suggestions of what you would like on the site.
I'll talk about the CBC contest for the most important Canadian book of the decade in my next blog.
